Holiday Trips to
Italy
Yes it is true the
miracle of Italy is that all its treasures come packaged in a
gorgeous country of majestic mountains, placid lakes, idyllic islands,
splendid cities and wonderful walled villages.
Italy has an ideal climate plus warm and
gracious people that make Italy a perfect
destination for an active vacation, the art lover, the gourmand, the
hedonist combined, why not, with business.
Active Holidays in Italy
Doing nothing is not easy in Italy! For
active holidaymakers Italy features a wide variety of distraction to
choose from, when you want to gain new strength and energy from your
adventures and activities.
Art Cities in Italy
The great artistic legacy of Italy, unequalled anywhere in the
world, is not only distributed throughout the major cities and their
famous museums; one can say in truth that there is no Italian city,
however modest, which does not contain and cherish some share of this
wealth of art. Indeed, many of them can be considered real treasures -
so beautiful and valuable are the works they contain. The artistic
riches of Italy's main cities have already been described.
Food & Wine in Italy
The gentle lifestyle of Italy is partly a product of its civilized
eating habits: eating and drinking in tranquility at least once a day
are a norm here.
Alternative Vacation in Italy
Do you want to tailor yourself a different vacation ? Italy offers a
variety of opportunities. Why don't try your hands at pottery or blowing
glass ? why not experience ancient music classes or test yourself in
cooking or learning italian ? and a lot more...
Thermal Spa in Italy
The culture linking spas and health runs throughout the history of
mankind. "For more than 600 years the only doctors the Romans ever saw
where their spas" Pliny observed. Ideas on how to spend your leisure
time, proposing a new kind of holiday looking after both body and soul.

Meetings & Incentives in Italy
Old castles and modern hotels, magnificent villas and beautiful
holiday resorts - Italy offers a wide choice of prestigious localities
and venues, all fully equipped, for a perfect combination of work and
pleasure.
The Best Places to Visit in Rome
described below include the most popular tourist attractions in the
Eternal City. Although we have focused on monuments, piazzas and
historic Rome, the city has a vibrant side that can be seen only by
visiting its neighborhoods. Take time to walk Trastevere and its Sunday
Flea Market or along the Via del Corso for a study in opposites.
Rome is crowded in high tourist season and you need to make the crowds
part of the fun. Pizza, spaghetti, gelato, good food, good drink and a
romantic setting - who could ask for more?
For those of you visiting the Mediterranean area for the first time, get
ready for scrubby bushes and arid, weedy-looking hillsides. Rome can be
brutally hot during the summer, so be sure to take your sunscreen and a
broad brimmed sun hat.
Plan to tour in the morning or late in the day and spend lunchtime doing
what the Italians do - eating and napping. Just make sure you hotel is
air-conditioned! One more thing to note: cool summer evenings are when
Rome awakens!
Attractions are usually open all day during the summer tourist season
but shorten their hours from October through March. Most attractions are
closed on Italian public holidays.
The Roman Imperial Forums
The Forums mark the historical center of the city and contain fine
examples of the grandeur of ancient Rome. The excavations are still in
progress and there are several sites to examine including the Forum of
Caesar, the Temple of Peace (Forum of Vespasian) and the Forum of Trajan
(the best preserved of all of the forums). For more information follow
this link
Colosseum
The profile of the Colosseum remains dramatic, but you need to tour
inside for a revealing look into history. The arena was designed to hold
fifty thousand spectators while the lions and gladiators did their work.
Palatine Hills (Palatino) and Palace Complex
Replete with ruins of various emperors' palaces, the Palatine Hill
is, according to legend, where Rome was founded. The Palatino, where the
who's who of Ancient Rome lived, overlooks the Forums and the Circus
Maximus.
Circus Maximus -
It is said that the Roman emperors kept the citizens happy by providing
bread and circuses. The Colosseum and the Circus Maximus were part of
that plan. The Circus Maximus was a famous chariot racing area of
ancient Rome. No original buildings remain but based on the outline of
the track, the curves must have been trouble.
The Pantheon
One of the true glories of ancient Rome, the Temple of the Pantheon
occupies a site where Agrippa built an earlier temple. Hadrian
commissioned the spectacular rotunda and its marvelous dome.
Hadrian is one of the most interesting of the Roman emperors. His
travels took him throughout the Roman Empire at its peak. His
architectural accomplishments can be found in a variety a places,
including Israel, Greece, Great Britain and, of course, Rome.
Capitoline Hill
The Capitoline Hill and its well regarded museums Palazzo dei
Conservatori (a building and square constructed according to plans
developed by Michelangelo) and the Capitoline Museum (Palazzo dei Museo
Capitolino) are worth your time.
Visit Capitoline Museums for information on opening hours and
exhibitions.
The Capitoline Hill was a seat of power in ancient Rome and remains a
center of government even today.
Castel Sant Angelo (Hadrian's Mausoleum) -
Castel Sant Angelo offers panoramic views along the Tiber and is one of
Rome's outstanding architectural monuments. The building has served
Roman emperors, several popes (it is still connected to the Vatican by a
passageway) and as part of the defensive wall surrounding Rome.
The Vatican in Italy
We consider a visit to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica to
be highlights of a trip to Rome. See the Best Places to Visit in the
Vatican for more information
Piazza Venezia
This large central square is the hub of the city. Watch the traffic
while attempting to reach it, as the intersection is very dangerous. The
Palazzo Venezia, the most impressive building on the Piazza Venezia, is
a museum known for its collection of medieval and Renaissance works,
including a textile section. A walk along the upscale shopping district
surrounding the Via Del Corso is a good way to while away an hour or
two.

Piazza Navona
Originally the site of the Circus Domitanus, this lovely piazza is
surrounded by fine buildings and includes a number of attractive
fountains, including Bernini's la Fontana. It is a great place for
people watching or having a drink at one of the many cafes. If you have
time, visit the Church of Sant'Angese.
Piazza de Spagna
Perhaps the most famous meeting place in Rome, the Piazza de Spagna
includes the famous Spanish Steps (the Scalinata della Trinita' de Monti)
which lead from the piazza to the church Trinita dei Monte. It is a
staple for visitors to be photographed on the Spanish Steps.
Fontana di Trevi
This world famous fountain, at the front of the Palazzo Poli, is
celebrated for its beauty and the legend that if you toss a coin into
its waters you will be guaranteed a return to Rome.
Sant' Andrea al Quirinale
A beautiful church that is regarded as a Baroque masterpiece,
Sant'Andrea is considered one of Bernini's finest works. The
architecture of the Church and its interior decorations are well
balanced.
Egyptian Obelisks
If you are a fan of Egyptian obelisks, you can see one in the Piazza
Navona and another in the Piazza San Giovanni.
Catacombs of Saint Callixtus
Although touring catacombs is not for everyone, these are considered
the best and are important to those interested in the early history of
Christians in Rome.
Ponte Fabrico
This bridge across the Tiber was constructed in 62 BC is still in use
(It was originally called the Pons Fabricus).
The Temples of Ancient Rome
The ancient Romans worshipped various gods and goddesses and built
temples to honor those they particularly feared. (Examples abound in the
city and the best ruins include the temples of Saturn, Castor and Pollux,
Venus and Roma). Other temples of note were named for emperors (the best
of these are the ruins of the temples of Caesar and Vesparian).
Trajan's Market.
One of the earliest permanently covered shopping arcades, Trajan's
market from the 1st Century is the best preserved of the ancient markets
in Rome.
Arch of Constantine
Located between the Colosseum and the Forum, Constantine's Arch is
the largest and best preserved of the ancient Roman arches. It provides
a sense of history and demonstrates the grandeur of the Roman Empire.

Rome
The "Eternal City" is one of the most popular tourist destinations in
the world. Once the capital of western civilization, Rome has an
incredible number of world class attractions, including, churches,
monuments, piazzas, fountains, and museums. At one time, the saying "All
roads lead to Rome" was a truism and the city displays its heritage in a
spectacular fashion. Rome is a great destination; you will run out of
time before you run out of things to see and do.
Florence
From the point of view of art and architecture, Florence rivals Rome.
During the renaissance, Florence was the art centre
of western civilization. A list of past residents of the city reads like
a "Who's Who" of the Masters, including: Dante, Leonardo da Vinci,
Machiavelli, Michelangelo, and Raphael, among others. Culture seems to
ooze from the frescoes and statues; perhaps that is why Florence and its
museums tend to be incredibly attractive to tourists.
Tuscany
Florence is the crown jewel of Tuscany but there are other noteworthy
towns that beckon. The countryside of Tuscany has been the setting for
many wonderful works of literature and the countryside's geography and
culture have played a key role in setting our expectations for this
wonderful area. If you can spend some time savoring the delights of
Tuscany, you will find it a most enjoyable experience.
Siena is a lovely medieval town in the center of Tuscany and a great
place to base your exploration of the region. Siena also has its own
charms, including fine churches and museums.
Pisa and its famous Leaning Tower are worth a visit if you are touring
Tuscany. Make no mistake, Pisa has some interesting sights, but it pales
in comparison to the company it keeps.
Venice
Canals, beautiful buildings, world famous landmarks, Venice is an
experience unique in the world of travel. Whether taking a gondola down
the Grand Canal or gazing at the unique setting and architecture, Venice
is a vision that you will never forget.
Be sure to see the Piazza San Marco including the Basilica (St. Mark's)
and the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale). The Grand Canal is another must,
as is much of Venice.
Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre on the "Italian Riviera" is a band of five scenic
towns nestled along a hilly, coastal region. The Cinque Terre is both a
National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The five towns of the
Cinque Terre (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and
Rigmaggiore) are connected by trails and the best way to see the area is
to hike between towns. Alternatively, you can take the train or
sometimes a boat between the towns.
Milan
Milan is a glamorous city but not in the same class as Rome, Florence,
or Venice. Milan, widely known as a fashion centre,
provides the tourist a number of world class attractions that are
tightly clustered in Milan's Center. Be
sure to see the Duomo, La Scala, Castello Sforzesco and the Galleria
Vittorio Emanuele II.
If you plan on seeing Leonardo's "The Last Supper" be sure to make
reservations in advance; tickets can also be reserved by contacting
companies specializing in arranging museum tickets for travelers.
If you are planning to see the Last Supper during high tourist season or
around Easter, you may need to reserve tickets several weeks in advance
to guarantee admission during your trip to Milan.
Umbria
Although no part of Italy is undiscovered, many travelers believe that
Umbria and its hill towns are the best of Italy. Perugia, Assisi, Spello,
Orvieto, and Gubbio are towns that are worth a look.
The hill towns are small cities that offer a delightful change of pace.
Most of these towns grew around their church and feature winding walks
and curvy, narrow roads and interesting but not dramatic architecture.
You will find a limited number of residents who speak English and
communications may be a challenge. Conversely, the restaurants are
delightful, the people friendly and the pace of life enjoyable. Lunch
and a quiet afternoon are a must, since most shops will be closed after
lunch until early evening.
Campania
This area includes Naples, Capri, Positano, Sorrento, Pompeii, and other
good quality attractions, Naples is often considered as the gateway to
the Amalfi Coast, however, it has lost much of its former charm. It's
the largest town in the area and suffers from high crime rates. It is
not a destination recommended by ThereArePlaces.
Well known for its coastlines and Islands, Campania has a lot to offer.
Capri and other islands in this area are great places to kick back and
enjoy the high life.
Pompeii should be visited if you are in the area, or as a long day trip
from Rome. Destroyed by a cataclysmic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius,
Pompeii's history has been unearthed by archaeologists during the last
century and is an impressive site.
Sicily
Plan your visit before July or after August, as the heat during high
summer is oppressive. Sicily is filled with many tourist delights
including good beaches and interesting archaeological excavations of
Greek and Roman settlements (Syracuse, Agrigento, and others).
